Fitzgerald, F. Scott. Tender is the Night: A Romance. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1934. First edition. 8vo. pp. 408. Dark bluish green cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Top and bottom edges trimmed. Pen and ink drawings by Edward Shenton. Some rubbing to binding, slight curve to front board, spotting to bottom page edge, binding sound; very good-. In facsimile dust jacket. Hardcover.
First printing, with the Scribner’s “A” and seal to copyright page. Previously published in four installments in Scribner’s Magazine, this is Fitzgerald’s fourth novel, and only 7,600 copies of the first printing were produced. The bleakness of the plot mirrors the dark times the author was experiencing during its writing, particularly his professional frustration and the disintegration of his marriage to Zelda. Fitzgerald considered this to be his masterwork, and was distressed by its initial lukewarm reception and mixed reviews. However, the book’s reputation has grown with time, earning it much critical acclaim, wide regard as one of his best books and indeed one of the great American novels.*Bruccoli A 15.1.a.
